Tuesday 27th December – Bike ***** sunny – Two Rivers

Up early as Rob and Hannah are heading off to Devon. Back to bed for a read and doze but too nice a day to lay around so get up have porridge, pack some Christmas cake and head out on the bikes at midday:)
We head down to the prom which is a big mistake as it is absolutely heaving with half of Suffolk enjoying the calm airs and bright sunshine! We avoid a lot of the crowds by going through the Spa garden, then back on the road at The Fludgers and onto The Dip where again the beach path is busy. We make slow progress past the golf course then turn off on the River Deben path missing out the jetty at The Ferry.
We pass the houseboats, go through the sheep gate and catch up with our old birdwatching friend, on his electric bike. We stopped for a nice chat and learned his name is Roger. He said there were Bearded Tits about, we have never seen them before so were keeping an eye open. Then about 400m along the path there was a group of people on the path with camera’s and binoculars watching the reeds. A couple were walking back up the bank after taking some pics lower down and we asked what was about? They said there was a large group of Bearded Tits feeding in the reed heads and he had some great shots on his expensive Canon camera and lens! We soon spotted the feeding birds with as many as three to a reed head! There must have been at least 20 taking no notice of the many watchers:) I headed down the river embankment to get some pics and was soon joined by Mag and Roger. We were treated to an amazing display as the tits fed in the reeds, the best bit was when they landed and the reed head just bent double with their weight. It was one of the only times I wish I have a decent DSLR with a good lens as my Bridge camera struggles to get good bird pics, perhaps I can upgrade one day if our premium bonds come up but then you have to carry a heavy camera with you!!! The tits moved further along the dyke and were soon replaced by a couple of Reed Warblers but we didn’t spot the Short-Eared Owl that was about earlier!
Getting a bit peckish we carried on to Kings Fleet and up to Fakenham Church where we stopped for cake and great views :) Then onto Kirton and Trimley turning down Grimston Lane where we got a text from Rob saying he had arrived safely in Devon after 7 hours! We didn’t bike down to the Orwell this time but could see it in the distance as we biked the beautiful tree lined path back to Felixstowe. I stopped at Morrisons to check the local papers to see if I had any pics in but sadly I didn’t, so continued home for a well-deserved cuppa and to light our lovely fire and warm up:)
A top bike ride, out 3 hours, covering 15 miles.
